About Me

Last updated January 11, 2012
Hi, I'm gail from My Repurposed Life

As I say in my profile I am a mom, aunt, sister, cousin and friend to many. I am in the process of repurposing my life, after many life changing incidents. I love to look for trash to turn into treasures! It is what makes me happy, and keeps me busy. I was a pre-kindergarten teacher for 19 years. The only reason I am no longer teaching is because the school closed. That was a little over four years ago.  I am now unemployed and to make ends meet I work part time doing odd jobs.
My regular readers know I have one daughter, Jamie.  She is my best friend. Jamie moved to Nashville after she graduated from Depauw University.  I miss her terribly, but Nashville is the best place for her. It’s less than three hours from Louisville, so we make do.
I also have a great niece and nephew who are like my own children.

This is Jamie and her new husband  Andy.

There have been two marriages this year! Bubba  married  Anna, a wonderful young lady I am happy to welcome to the family.

100_5507  The furbabies. That would be Kitty on the left, Louie in the middle and Matt on the right. Louie is the grand-dog.

100_9804My fish—who have been very busy producing offspring! These four fish have blessed me with about 10 babies this summer.

100_6767Here are four of the babies, many of them are still brown and difficult to see.

As you probably know, I live in Louisville, KY.  I’ve lived here all my life, and have lived in the same house for the last 36 years.

100_7083This is my house. Ignore the huge bushes please, in fact pretend they don’t exist, that’s what I do!  I would love to remove them, but if you’ve ever taken out bushes like this, you know what a job it is. I have been  removing a couple a year, but this year I haven’t removed any!  (we’ll blame it on the heat!)
The fish pond is right beyond the jockey, and tipsy pots.

I love that this is home. It’s my home. It’s not the best, nor the worst home, but it’s home to me!

It’s hard to say which room is my favorite. I suppose I would have to say the living room, because that is where I gather with the kids! I did a makeover on my living room and that included a  fireplace makeover  in early 2010.

Recently there were lots of posts about “where I blog”.  I didn’t join in because it wasn’t worth doing an entire post about my little corner of the couch.

My favorite thing to do DIY wise is to repurpose every day items that are headed for the garbage/landfill.

IM000565I also like making benches out of headboards.

If you would like to see many more repurposed items you can check out my gallery year 1 2 or 3  It is the quickest way to tour my site.

I wish I knew how to tile so I could do a new backsplash when I do my mini makeover on my kitchen. I plan to paint the cabinets and possibly the vinyl floor.  Doing a new backsplash would make a huge difference. The reason it will be a mini makeover is because I will not be replacing my appliances.
Update:
I did a makeover on my kitchen from top to bottom--well except for the appliances. You can see all the details by viewing the label kitchen makeover.

Something you may not know about me is I used to DIY when Jamie was small. However, being a wife, mom and teacher, made my DIY  take a hiatus.

May 85-June86302
I made a Cookie Monster bean bag toss.  I ended up using this in my class until the very end.

May 85-June86297
I also made a Care Bear.

May 85-June86298
Jamie had a playhouse in the back yard. I made a stove/sink piece. (note the window)

May 85-June86292
The playhouse was a regular shed that we modified with a porch, a dutch door and a window.

Why I love to blog:
While surfing the internet for inspiration on some of my finds I ran across blogland. It really is a wonderful place. There are blogs on any and every subject you can imagine. In July 2009 I started writing this blog. It became a journal of all of my re-claimed, re-purposed treasures.
Blogging has become a huge part of my life. I am not sure whether I work on projects so that I can blog, or if I blog so I can work on my many projects. It's not a huge blog, with tons of followers, but it is MY blog. My life now has a purpose. I don't expect to blog for the rest of my life, but it has certainly helped me get through a very difficult time in my life. My readers are very supportive, although I don't know them personally, I feel an attachment toward them.  People who write blogs, or follow blogs will understand the kinship you feel toward these people who are total strangers. I have prayed for them, cried for their loss of loved ones, celebrated  graduations, weddings, and births.  That is why I blog.

So, there you have it, probably more information than you needed to know. But, if you still have “inquiring minds” feel free to ask me anything in a comment below.

I'm not sure how I stumbled onto your blog - I started with centsational girl and followed BOTB sites and how lucky for me to find you. Besides all the wonderful stuff you produce which I will try to emulate, you inspire me on a personal level to keep motivated and moving. Very soon I will be making a change back to the US from a third world country where reusing "other people's garbage" is a way of life. I look forward to using your ideas to start over again. Thanks a bunch!

You're incredibly handy! My mom and I repurpose fabrics and other materials as wall art, but I tend to stay away from things involving alot of nailing. Do you sew, too? P.S. I really like the "window cabinet". It's an incredible transformation!

I'm late, as always, reading things, but I finally stopped for a minute and decided to read about YOU. I'm not disappointed. Your re-purposed work is sensational. How do you come up with your ideas, lady? Whatever it is you have, don't lose it! I read very few blogs now, but yours is one I DO read. Your posts are informative. You're always doing something, and never forgetting the little person who reads about it. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for all you do!

Thank you so much Kat for your very kind words! Staying on top of things, and always trying to come up with something new can be challenging. Sometimes I feel like I need to look at something standing on my head to "see" what it "can" be!

I found your blog thru Pinterest- have never responded to anyone before, but felt the need to tell you that I feel strangely connected, as I do all of the same projects that you do, from repurposing furnishings to spray painting my hinges! I even own the exact same antique rocking chair, and reupholstered it!! Were we related in another life:)(Kidding)

Thank you for your very sweet comment Janine!
I have no way to reach you. I'm glad you found my blog and I hope to inspire you on some level that you haven't quite reached yet. ;)

I am grateful to have found your blog. I purchased an old sewing cabinet in a thrift store near my house but didn't exactly fit my machine so I researched and found you. Now, I am motivated to have it done but don't know how but I'll keep checking in your site. Thank you.

Hi Gail, Just found your blog and I am your newest follower. Been snooping around and you are amazing. You are the reason that I read blogs. You remind me of my sister. Just wanted to tell you, (although you probably have already) but tiling is so easy. if I can do it, you definitely can. If you buy the little tiles, 1/2 inch squares, attached in mesh on 12 inch squares, they are the easiest to work with. Less cutting. The hardest thing about tiling is layout. I tiled our backsplash in the kitchen and My hubby and I tiled our 600 squarefoot kitchen and porch. Floors are hard on the back but the backsplash was easy. You could start on a redo project like a dresser, and tile the top of it. You will be amazed at how easy it is. If you layout your electrical outlets so you wont have to cut, you would be laughing. Just pull the little tiles off the mesh. That's your cut. lol I think you can see my tiling job on my post called Sodastream Hack. Anyways, You are truly going to be one of my favorite reads now. I am so excited! I will probably go back and snoop and see that you have already tiled, but if you haven't, please send me a message and I will walk you through it. If I lived by you, I would come and help you! I could learn so much from you. Thanks for sharing with blogland and me!!!!! Cheers!

I have been lurking on your blog for the last couple of days as I just discovered the world of blogging while looking for inspiration on a makeover piece of curbside furniture. After reading most of everything you wrote and viewing your work I will be following. Hope you continue to inspire!

Gail, you know you have a special place in my life. For some reason this morning I was cruising around you blog-home and thought I would read your "about me". I tend to do that to the blogs I follow/communicate with often and I gotta tell ya, I'm glad I did. First, let me tell ya I'm envious on your home. What a cute place. Being from Cinn, Ohio I miss homes with that style (make any sense?). Second, I LOVE the love you have for your home. I feel the same way about my home. I've lived here for almost 20yrs and I've come close to loosing it a few times. Anyhoo, I wanted to tell ya that I'm glad I'm a follower and that I've been lucky enough to start a friendship with you. I hope that sometime on a trip to Cinn, I can stop by Ky. and say HOWDY : )

Oh Gail, thank you so much for sharing your story. I skipped the gym this morning to catch up on blogs and read a little more than I normally do. I realized I look at your blog often, but didn't know much about the woman behind the fabulous projects! You are such an inspiration to so many of us out there trying to do the same thing. Connect with other like minded creatives, create for the joy of it, and to provide some income to ourselves and our families, and maybe learn some new skills along the way.

You are about the handiest gal I have met up with the blogosphere, meaning, you can do all the construction and then beautify the end result too. I would love to know how you got started with all the power tools? Self taught? Learned as a kid? Took some classes? I am a little of all, I am thinking of taking some more classes in wood working, but the rest is a product of a can-do father who never like to throw anything out!

Hope you have a wonderful day. -K

thank you very much ladies!

I am totally self taught, taking many years off for mom/wife duties. But now that I'm back at it, it's like riding a bike! I never had as many tools as I do now. It's amazing what you can build with the right tools! (even though I may not be able to remember what they are all called!)

Do not know how I found your blog but glad I did. I have the old headboard in the garage and the old chandelier and the old door and the old hubby who helped haul it all home. Now thanks to you some great ideas on how to paint and reuse it all! I am in awe of your wonderful blog and creative ideas. What a talent you are! Thanks from MN.

Gail,

Always have been a DIY'er at heart but it's like you've given me a new perspective where now I'm looking at things in a whole new repurposed way. I was also wondering what you had for woodworking experience and was encouraged after reading your last post that maybe there is hope for me yet. Your can-do attitude really inspires me, Thank you for that!! I'm anxious to see what your working on next:)
