Artwork repurposed (chalkboards)

I’ve been trying to get ready for Glendale Crossing days.  I’ve always had great success with chalkboards, the larger the better.

frame2

I picked this frame up for a a few bucks at a junk store.  (I secretly worry that I’m going to someday paint over a masterpiece!)

I taped it off with some ScotchBlue, then used this wonderful Krylon Dual spray paint on the frame. I LOVE the color!

Then, I painted it with chalkboard paint. There’s a blemish over on the right where there was some wear in the crushed velvet. I thought about gluing some ribbon or something all the way around where the velvet is. Any suggestions for an easy fix?  It’s not nearly as noticeable in real life.

I got this frame last week at a yard sale for $2.50.  It’s really large!

It can be hung either way, landscape  or portrait.

Here are some that have sold really quickly in the last few years:

DIY magnetic chalkboard

canvas chalkboard

cabinet door repurposed into chalkboard

I LOVE chalkboards!  I use two in my kitchen all the time. I wonder how I ever got along without them, oh wait, I know!  I was younger and I didn’t have to write everything down in order to remember it!  Is that happening to YOU yet?

I have a couple more that I can make for Glendale if I find the time.  If something doesn’t sell at Glendale, at least now I have a place to sell it.  (my booth)

I don't even see the blemish you're talking about on that frame!

The chalk boards look great ... I love chalkboards also. I painted one in my kitchen on the cellar door. We had one on ours when I was a kid and It brings back fond memories. Thanks for sharing your projects.

How about gluing a little gadget over the blemish to hold the chalk/pen?
I would love to get frames this big for little money for crafting.
Have a great week,
Sue

That first picture was painted by my Great Grandfathers stepsisters Aunt second cousin twice removed that actually passed away while painting and has been a family treasure ever since. Thanks for finding it! Oh and it looks fabulous...

Great work...everyone can use a chalk board.

Sue-that's very brilliant! :) I'll look into that. This one is the one that is more of a square, so it wouldn't matter which way they wanted to hang it. THANK you for such a great idea!
Cynthia, Yep-right over the canvas.
Thanks to everyone for your very kind comments!
heather---too funny!

These are all darling, and I am sure they will be big hits at the sale. In fact I am sure you do well with all your creative projects...sounds like so much fun, wish they had something like that around here!

If it makes you feel any better, I'm 29 and have had to write everything down my whole life :) If it doesn't make the list, it doesn't get done because I forget it!
If the blemish isn't as noticeable in real life, I might just leave it. Repurposed things have imperfections at times and I'm ok with that!
But finding a ribbon to accent the frame and break it up from the board would also be super cute :)

Beautiful job~as always :-) I also love chalkboards and yes, I have to write everything down (if I can remember what it was from the time I leave my chair til I get to the chalkboard :-)

Love your chalkboards Gail! Another project on my to do list, Lol! I've wanted to make a chalkboard for my kitchen for awhile now, and something always comes up. Thanks for the inspiration. I think I'm motivated now to get making a chalkboard. Thanks for the tip on painting over the canvas.

Well, I was going to mention a gadget to hold the chalk... but Sue beat me to it! (Yay for Sue!) I was also going to mention, if it's not that noticible in real life, then leave it as it is but Shannon already said that. (Yay for Shannon!) Apparently I'm a might bit slow this morning! LOL

Good luck on your sell!

The chalkboards look great!

I think they're both great! I kind of like a few flaws, myself. Character. :)

I like the chalk holder idea. In case that doesn't work out, maybe just spray some texture on the frame and put a second coat on?
