Step Stool Graphics Fairy Image

100_9928
Perhaps you remember that I picked up this stool over the weekend at
Tickled Pink.  I paid $3.99 for it.  Ever since I saw Terri’s coffee table, and all the neat stuff Korrie does, I have been wanting to transfer one of Karen’s (The Graphics Fairy) images onto something.

100_9932
I printed the image on my printer.

100_9930
I rubbed the back of the paper a LOT with a pencil.  North/South, East/West, and every which way in between.

100_9934
I taped it to the stool with some
ScotchBlue Painter’s tape. I hinged it.  I do this with a lot of stuff, including my vinyl. So if ever I mention “hinge” you know what I mean.

100_9936
I used a ball point pen to trace over the image, which in turn transferred the image onto the stool.  It works really well.  With the hinge in place, I was able to lift the paper to make sure it was transferring well enough. I should have done this method with the
Vintage Ironing Board.

I then used a paint pen and a sharpie to trace and color in the transferred image.

100_9952
I wanted to paint the legs, since they had never been painted.  (they were still in their natural wood state). But I knew I wanted to stain the stool, so I used the
ScotchBlue to keep the paint off the stool.

100_9955
I painted the legs with Martha Stewart Heavy Cream. If you have a chance, you should pick
these up at Home Depot.com for $4.98.

100_9961
Look how easily the tape came off.

100_9966
Now it’s time to stain the top. Mess it up.  I love dark walnut, but it really was not the right option for this project.  (hindsight 20/20-I think the real problem was NOT the stain, but the fact that I sanded too much of the paint off before adding the stain.)  You can scroll up to see the difference in the color of the paint.

100_9973
This is after a coat of dark walnut and a coat of wipe-on Poly. I stained the legs a little to age them, although you can’t tell in this picture.

The image sort of gets lost. Not all projects turn how the way we envision, do they?  It’s still a great little stool, I think I may keep it in the kitchen under my
kitchen island so I can reach things up high.

I have another (oops) that I did this week, but I’ll save that for next week.  I can’t have ya’ll knowing how much I mess stuff up!  Smile   What’s the last oops (project gone wrong) that you worked on?

ps the weather is turning a little cooler this week. I hope to get outside to work on some projects!

The stool turned out really nice, I like it! Thanks for the little tutorial. By the way we have a similar one in the kitchen and it is really handy.

super cute! that was a great way to revamp a simple little stool!

All that work and you can hardly see it, bummer. The stool is still cute though so it doesn't really matter.
Would you have used a different color stain if you were to do this again? Or put the graphic on last in a different color, maybe white?
I'd love to do one of those graphics too. They are so cute!
I'm currently working on fixing a "flub". grrrrr, I hate to do things over!

Hi Gail, the stool is adorable! I guess the stain dissolved the paint stick... Maybe next time some watered down brown paint to stain it and then Poly over the top? The stool is still really cute, you can still see the design faintly... I love it!

Cute little stool, so sorry you lost the graphic in the stain. The last thing I messed up was a small two shelf bedside table that I decoupaged on top with floral gift wrap. Bad job that I have to sand off and then maybe just paint by hand.

Keep up the good work.

The stool is darling, great job on your lettering!.
Just an FYI. Next time try staining with Tole Acrylic paint. Water it down and wipe as you go. Then do the lettering (use white on dark transfer paper or graphite paper on light color), do the letters. Cover with a clear sealer. You can lightly sand before/or after the sealant. Art teacher passed this on to me years ago. Works great.

Here's a link to Artistclub. Great prices.

I think it is great, I hate do overs and sometimes they turn out even better. I would have tried to sand it off or something. I love walnut stain too. I think you can still see it. I mess up a lot because I don't know when to stop.

I love it! The way the image fades away a little is perfect! Gotta remember this one!

So cute...love it! Ya gotta love a Sharpie, right?! Great for any black furniture "touch ups".

BTW, I already sold my table, YAY! Sad to see it go, but it didn't match my decor so I figured I might as well make some money off of it, right?!

I have never ever seen something like that before, what a cool technique!!! It looks so shabby vintage, I love the result

I absolutely ADORE the way this turned out! I appreciate the subtlety of it, and totally want to do this when I get a coffee table! Just linked this to my blog! Thanks for sharing!

I love it! I have been looking for a little stool like this to put in my entry way. Have you used graphite paper? It saves your arm and transfers nicely.

I don't think it even looks like an oops project, just worn and faded. Thanks for the tutorial, your pictures and instructions are really helpful.

I think the stool is very cute! This is the project I messed up recently: http://mycoveredbridge.blogspot.com/2011/08/fireplace-screen-makeover-part-1.html. I'll fix it this weekend.

I really like how it turned out! With it being a little faded, it looks more authentic! Great project!

It's still adorable. You're braver than I am; here's my theory:
If at first you don’t succeed, hide all evidence that you ever tried!

Anita @ GoingALittleCoastal said...

I still think it turned out great! It might be more faint then you had imagined but I wouldn't consider it an oops!

It might have been more faint then you were trying for but I think it's CHARMING and loooooks aged to perfection! JMHO

Oops is my life. I never get anything right the first time. I don't know, maybe you should of reversed the paints, stain on the legs and white on the top and then put your stencil on? Just thinking out loud. It still looks super cool though, I love that stencil technique you used.

Suzanne@Meridian Road said...

I don't think I'd call that an oops! I like how the image doesn't just jump out at you. I think it looks like it's been there a long time, so that's cool!

Wow Gail...thanks for the tutorial! That stool turned out really pretty and romantic. I did something similar by choosing a romantic french letter from Graphics Fairy and added it on my mailbox. Hope you can visit.

Great little table. Just stumbled to your blog from pinterest. I used to use the same process to transfer designs (the pencil on back) until I came across a package of carbon papers at a garage sale for really cheap. I wonder if they're still sold at office supply stores - you should check it out!
