Repurposed Crib into Easel/sandwich board sign

Back in June I got a couple of items from my Aunt Helen and Cousin Lois.  You’ve already seen what I did with the sewing cabinet (Helena)

repurposed sewing cabinet (45)

vintage cribWhen I got the sewing cabinet, I also picked up an old crib. Because these drop side cribs have been outlawed, they will be plentiful at the curb.  This decal was so cute, I have to tell you it was very difficult for me to sand it off, but I did:

100_9684I was pleased with how well it smoothed out.

100_9683Because this crib was old, I did a lead paint test on it. (negative)

100_9693I used my paint sprayer to spray on some primer.

100_9694

100_9706I then painted it white with my paint sprayer. (It sure does make projects a lot easier)

100_9742Due to the heat we had in July, I brought it indoors to finish it up. I used ScotchBlue Painter’s tape.

repurposed cribI brushed on three coats of chalkboard paint.

repurposed cribI bought a piano hinge to put the two pieces together. Let me tell ya, crawling around on the living room floor putting all those screws in, just about did me in. I could barely hobble around for over a week!

repurposed cribThis would look GREAT at my booth at Glendale.  I am torn between using this as a sandwich board sign and a child’s easel.

repurposed cribI’m still trying to figure out how to finish it off. It’s been in this state for several weeks, while I think about the final details.

repurposed cribIf I make it a child’s easel, I will apply dry erase contact paper on this side, along with a clip to hold art paper.  At the bottom, I will install a tray to hold art supplies.

diy easelIt really would make a great easel for some lucky child, but, if I repurpose it as a sandwich sign board, it’s DONE!  (except for a chain to keep it from sliding open too far)

I would love to take credit for this, however, when I blogged about receiving the crib I got this comment:

You can see my inspiration at Katie’s blog The Red Kitchen.   My readers are the BEST! They’re always ready to help me out!  ditto is SOOO right, I love chalkboard paint!

What would be your vote?  Easel or Sandwich Sign Board?

I love it just the way it is! That was one adorable crib. Love the details of it. You should definitely use it at Glendale.

WOW.....What a transformation!! It would be perfect for a sidewalk 'Special of the Day' menu board for a business. I bet it would be snapped up in a minute if advertised as such. You never cease to amaze me with your talent!

Gail I love this! What a great repurpose this is! I love the idea to use it as an easel with dry erase on the other side! Great!

Tough one, either way it would look great, I'm the worst decision maker so I would probably try to combine the two some how, no matter how impractical!

This is awesome! I love this project!

It would be great as an easel; but, I'm loving the sandwich board sign. Fantastic repurpose!!

I love the way it turned out. It would be great in a child's room or for a homeschooling mom to use for lessons.

Instead of dry erase, I'd put up a roll of paper inside the flat area with a clip or two to hold the paper in place on the bottom. I'd add something on to hold paints and crayons. I really need an old crib now!

Gail,
Awesome! With school starting up again, I think you'll have no trouble selling it as an easel. As for your chalkpaint -ahem- addiction, the first step is admitting you have a problem.

Girl, you have got it goin' on! Even though you did not come up with the original idea, you have executed it perfectly! I think it would make an adorable easel for kids, but that's probably because I KNOW my grand kids would go nuts over this!

Another project on my "to-do" list!

As always, thanks for the inspiration!

I just love this project. I want one! I have absolutely no need for a sandwich board sign but I want one anyway. I love the cut out of the wood on top! I bet it was hard to sand off those little critter. But it turned out great! I'd use it like that if I were you.

Awesome transformation!! I love it as a sandwich board sign and would be using it in my booth. However, if someone came along and just had to have it, I might have to adopt it out.

Gail- do you have a page or label marked 'tool' OR 'tools I use'?
I'd love to see this paint sprayer and don't recall seeing it before. Doesn't mean you haven't posted-- but RIGHT NOW I have paint sprayers on the mind. Ha!

I saw one on TV -- can't remember the name, but was curious about yours...

a link?

Wow. That crib brought back memories of my sons crib I bought at a thrift store for $5 back in 1985.

I love this easel Idea. Would be great for the grand baby.

I really love this project! Although I think it's a great sandwich board, I think it will have broader appeal (that is, greater resale value) as a child's easel. Either way...great work!

That is such a cool project! Now I want a sandwich board sign! For no reason, other than yours is so cute! I think it would be darling as a child's art easel, too.

The crib looks vaguely familiar~I think I may have slept in almost that exact crib!

That is a great project. I've been looking for a crib for something else. Now I have two great ideas. Thanks!!
Love to repurpose too.

I love it! It would be so super cute with a coat of magnetic paint as a base layer and then chalk board paint on top. Then you could dress it up by season or on a whim with some cute magnets! Such a cute cute piece.

Hi, found your site today and marched out to my garage to see if I still had a crib like yours or if I had finally sold it. I had not, but then got distracted by a large round table I have. It has been sanded for weeks waiting. I painted it with chalk board paint and cut strips of newspaper to decoupage the legs! Thanks for the motivation!

I love this and what a cool crib piece with those diamond cutouts!!

Woohoo I can't believe you finally did this! You should make more, for sure. I love the easel idea, I think it appeals to more buyers. Plus the way it folds up is so convent for a parent. You could always add a roller for paper and a lip on the bottom for the pens.

Wow ~ what a great job you did! The decal was very, very cute (probably because it was something from my era, yes old!)

But your transformation is fantastic! Love stopping by to visit with you!

Such a great idea! I would have had a hard time deleting the decal -- that was so vintage and cute! But I like what you did and you're right, these are all outlawed now so what to do with them? My son's crib which is 22 years old is still in the basement. Guess I better come up with a project for it!

Awesome idea! And I happen to have an old drop side crib in my garage...now I know what to do with it!

Awesome! I have 3 small children, so I say an easel. But either way is cool. I just love this. I shared it on my blog, www.FreeStuff4MyBaby.com, with several links helping my readers find this page. Beautiful stuff here!

I LOVE this idea! I am going to have to try that for the crib I have lying around. Thanks for the inspiration!

If you make it into a real sandwich board sign with straps to hold it on your shoulders..and take a picture of you walkin' around with it...I'll give you a big, wet, smooch...and maybe..like... a dollar cuz that's all I have right now...

Lawdy that would be hilarious...

Rather than using dry erase contact paper, you might want to try out the new transparent whiteboard paint that's featured on Design Sponge (http://www.designsponge.com/2011/11/transparent-whiteboard-paint.html).
