Easy Peasy Wooden Firecrackers

I love using scrap wood for projects. I have several long 2x2’s that I use to hold items on my sawhorses when I use my paint sprayer.  Because I had painted some things white and blue using my 2x2’s they were already primed and covered with paint.  I chose a  2x2 that was perfect for this project.

4th of July

When I won the DIY Club Monthly contest last October with my Toddler Bed (from a door) , I got these great primary colors of paint.

I sort of did a wash with the red and the blue.  The white was already old looking so I wanted the colors to match that look. After the paint dried, I sanded them back a bit. I drilled a hole in the top of each firecracker for the “wick”.

gorilla glue

When you use this wonderful Gorilla Glue, remember a little goes a long way. It expands, but when you know that, and take that into consideration, you will LOVE it!  The directions say to “damp it & clamp it”.  Rubber bands worked great to hold my wooden pieces together while the glue set up.  Thirty minutes folks, and it will hold like you won’t believe!

I first glued the two back pieces together, allowed that to dry, then added the third piece in front.

I used the same wire I use for my photo holders and curled them about the same way. I used Gorilla Glue Super Glue to hold the “wicks” in place.

4th of July

I used my Silhouette to make some vinyl to decorated my firecrackers.  That is what is so great about owning a Silhouette. When you want to make something on a whim, you hop on over to their online store and purchase an image for .99 cents. Each week they also have a “free image of the week” and clearance images for .50 cents.  Buy only what you want/need.

I was only going to make two sets, but I was able to get three sets out of one length of 2x2.

The one thing I wish I had done, was added some more stars to the design when I cut out the “usa”.  There was a ton of room with lots of negative vinyl.  I got in a hurry and regretted having so much waste.

Did you notice them in the booth from Saturday’s post?   Smile  While jamie was in town, we went to look at my booth, and she had a couple of great ideas that I will be implementing.  That girl of mine sure is a smart cookie!  Ohh, and jamie LOVED these fire crackers!  Smile  Since I hadn’t blogged about them, she had not seen them.

Hi... did you use a wood prima before painting the wood with acrylic paint? And for the 'wick' was it just a stiff wire?

Thanks Lesley (UK)

Lesley,

Because I had already used these scraps to hold items when I paint, they had been painted with "overspray". They had hints of white and blue already. I left the white(ish) ones alone. Some of the white ones had a blue tint on them, so I turned that blue(ish) side toward the blue wood.
The wire I used is explained here.
I'm always here to answer any questions you may have!

Love them! I really like the wire you used as well, and the gorilla glue is brilliant! I was biting/scraping and even sanding the super glue off my fingers for 2days after I made mine!!
Your booth looks fabulous!

Love the way they turned out! I made some of these last year, they are fun and easy to make and look great on a table for the 4th of July party that I have at my farm every year. Great job!

Now those are too cute! When I saw them, I thought, I hope she put some in her booth! I saw something similar made out of large dowels with fat twine as the wick. I like yours better :) I can't wait to see what Jaime suggested, did you put a rose tattoo on her too?
