Alphabet Photography Letters (sign)

You may be familiar with these type of signs. They make great wedding gifts—I gave a sign to Jamie and Andy yesterday at their bridal shower in Nashville (Goodlettsville) TN.  The pictures were all taken at my home (jamie’s childhood home).  I thought that having the pictures taken around my yard would hold more significance than if I ordered letters off of Etsy or somewhere else.

From our “porch” swing that has been in the yard since 1988.
young 2 bw
A birdbath that has been in the family for about 40 years. (it is upside down on the ground in this picture)

young 3 bw
The gate latch

young 4 bw
My “barn” shed door where my “stash” is stored!

young 5 bw

My patio chair.
Put them all together:

100_9839
A neighbor gave me a bunch of cabinet parts.

100_9841
One of the cabinet doors was the perfect size for this sign!

100_9868
I cut out Andy & Jamie and their wedding date with my Silhouette (did you know they are having a great promotion starting on the 21st?) Use the code REPURPOSED

100_9871
These are the best tools for applying vinyl.

100_9872
I positioned the vinyl and used some Scotch Blue  painter’s tape as my “hinge”

100_9874
I have a sample counter top chip that works great for burnishing the vinyl to the board.

100_9889
This is the glue stick I used to adhere the photos to the board.

I owe a big thanks to Tricia @ Three Petunias for helping me “photoshop” the pictures.  She is such a sweet lady!  AND her Three Petunias?  so darn cute!

Less than 2 weeks now till the wedding. Jamie has everything under control!  I’m so impressed with how much of this wedding planning she has done all by herself!   Love that girl!

Gail that is the coolest thing I have seen in so long.

I just love that it all comes from her yard growing up. I am sure she is going to love it.

I am anxious to see what the Silouette people have to offer. I have determined I cannot live without a cutter. Now I have to decide on which one.

Have a great week...

Hugs, Deb

It turned out fabulous - you really have an eye for seeing those letters, I would have seen a barn door and a gate latch! It's perfect, and so meaningful, and I'm sure it will be cherished forever. A crafter's dream gift!

That is the coolest sign! If I were as clever and as patient, I would make one. Judging by my past mishaps in the crafting arena, I can only admire yours, though. Putting on the lettering looks a bit difficult. Thanks for sharing. I am really enjoying your blogs.

I like the combo of the photos with the text. I did a similar idea sign for my son Zachary except we went downtown and picked out letters from signs (he's 5 so didn't want it to be too complicated). Printed them 8x10s and framed/ hung in his room. A combo of Walgreen's coupons and IKEA frames kept the project affordable.

Love it! I have done my last name using pictures taken around my home and totally agree that it is more sentimental that way. I am working on the alphabet now...some of those letters are dang tricky.

Such a cute idea! And much more personal using things familiar rather than someone elses art. I love it :)

So cool Gail! Makes you looks at your surroundings a little differently.

Becky said...

I love this so I printed off letters (great website you can find them on) and had them developed in B&W.. When I layed them out it was almost 3 ft long!! How long is the board you used and what size were the photos?? I want to make this as a gift too

gail@myrepurposedlife.net said...

This sign is about 12 x 30. I didn't zoom in on my pics, so after I got them back from the drug store, I was able to cut them down some. They developed at 4x6, I think I cut them down to 4 x 5.

Thanks to everyone for the very kind comments!
