Silhouette SD How to cut and apply vinyl

Did you know that you can get free fonts off the internet?
image
I went to dafont.com and chose “new fonts”.  Up in the left corner you can see the words Custom preview I typed in the words “Life is good”. That phrase is then shown in each of the fonts below. I also choose to show 50 per page to make it simple. When I found the font I liked “Alisha” I clicked download.  (download, save, save, open)   After your font downloads, you click it open and you get this screen.

Click “install” and your computer will then install the font, quickly and easily.

I opened my Silhouette software and clicked on the “A”  (over on the left) Then I placed my cursor near the top and I typed the words, one at a time. Typing them separate allows me to move them around easily. After I got the typed, I highlighted the words and chose the font Alisha (you can see that over on the right)
I then “sent it to silhouette”.  You can watch the video cut it out.
The Silhouette SD does it’s magic to cut my vinyl.

After the Silhouette was finished cutting, I unloaded the media and used my paper cutter to cut off the words that were just cut out.

Now I have a smaller portion to work with.

I carefully removed the negative portion (the part I’m not using for THIS project)

This is how it looked after I removed the negative.

This is the “negative” part that I removed. I saved it onto a piece of glossy paper I had saved from some pre-cut vinyl I purchased online. If you know me at all, you know that this can now easily be a stencil for another project!

Are you following me? I have two projects from one piece of cut vinyl.
This is how I applied the transfer paper to the cut vinyl. Please ignore the mess over on the fireplace. I keep the protective “sleeve” on my silhouette when not in use, and I just tossed it and the other stuff from my coffee table over on the hearth.    Embarrassed smile
This is me applying some of the vinyl to my repurposed cabinet door chalkboard that hangs in my kitchen.
I recorded it in two short segments, and decided to just go on and upload both.

I really love this font, it literally looks like I took a paint brush and hand-painted the words on the top of the chalkboard.
The words are spaced a little too far apart, but I’ll figure all that stuff out as I go along.

I put the butterfly in the bottom corner.
Truth be told, I did the butterfly only because I didn’t want to cut the vinyl and have an empty space.
I’m cheap frugal like that!

I absolutely love this chalkboard!  I use it all the time to remind myself of important stuff. Just like the top right that says “furnace filter 9”.  That reminds me on which day I need to replace the filter on the furnace.  The little love note is from Jamie. When I first put this chalkboard in the kitchen, she signed it. For Christmas Jamie gave me some chalk ink markers  so I erased the original note and asked her to write me another. I’m such a sap that way!

FYI  It took me LONGER to write this post than it did to do this project from start to finish!

Life is Good!  I would like to thank Silhouette America for giving me the opportunity to tell you all about this  wonderful machine! I did receive the machine free of charge, however as always the opinions are 100% my own.

Looks great Gail... amazing what a little bit of black will do to a piece... just brings it to life. Glad you are enjoying your machine.

Have fun...

I've started putting my negative space/future stencils on a piece of wax paper. Works great if you ever run out of the other glossy paper.

This is great! I've never used transfer paper before but yeah it makes sense...now I don't have to worry about repositioning the cut images by hand and messing the alignment. The butterfly brings nice balance to the frame.

Very cute!
Your Silhouette looks so easy to use. Now I know I bought the wrong thing. :(

Did you know you can use contact paper for transferring letters? I just rub it with my hands first, to take off a little bit of the stickiness.

Sweet! 2 projects! I love that! Thanks for the free font link too. I love the new detail to your repurposed door chalkboard. Great videos!

It's so neat to hear your voice too (and your accent)! That's something we rarely experience with blogging.

Stay warm!

I can totally seeing the kids falling in love with you when you were a teacher, your voice is so soothing and sweet. Love the accent! That is by far the best tutorial on how to apply the vinyl. Those videos really help. I had no clue about the transfer paper, I always wondered how to do that.

Really turned out cute! My favorite free fonts are over at Kevin and amandas site!

Wow! I've been a little scared to try vinyl in my Silhouette, but it looks pretty easy!

Are you able to reuse the transfer paper once you've used it once? I'm also very frugal!

Love your blog! Have had a wonderful time looking at all your projects. I'll never look at a cabinet sewing machine the same way again. I'm inspired!
