I am so happy the the nice people at Silhouette love me enough to let me have a Silhouette to show you all the wonderful things you can make! This project didn’t quite turn out as planned, but that’s okay. (It was bad painting on my part, nothing to do with the Silhouette SD!

I opened my Silhouette Studio and started a new project. I chose the “text” feature and typed in the word “Fun”. I love how you can easily see how large or small your cutout is going to be right on the screen.

Because I was a teacher for 19 years, AND because I never throw anything away, I have this label paper that is removable. It’s not like the label paper that you use for return address labels, it is easily removable. Amazon has some similar made by Post-it Super Sticky Removable Full Sheet Labels
I stuck it to the mat that is for thicker paper, and loaded it into my Silhouette SD. I appreciate that the Silhouette SD is simple to operate, having very few functions on the actual machine.

I apologize for the poor quality of this picture. You can see that the Silhouette SD cut the word out perfectly!

My niece gave me some castoff plates in December (thanks Marie!), so I decided to use them for this project.
But then I changed my mind and went with some larger plates instead:

This is another word that I cut out on my removable sticky paper.

And finally the last word.

You can see I removed the Fun from the smaller plate and put it on the larger one.

I used my Scotch Blue Painter’s tape to tape around the edges to keep my spray paint from working under my “stencil”.

After I taped around the stencil, I made a little window from a piece of newspaper.

I taped around the window of the newspaper and tucked the newspaper all around the plate.

I did the same thing with the other two plates.

This is how I cut the window. I had the newspaper folded and just cut the center out of it.

I took them outside and used some black spray paint on them.

Since I’m pretty new at this stenciling, I really don’t know what I’m doing.

I peeled away the newspaper.

Then I peeled away the stencil.

Peeled out the oodles and boodles (Deb, what’s the difference between an oodle and a boodle?)

Oops! That’s not so good! This could be because I removed the stencil from the smaller plate and then placed it on the larger plate—maybe it lost some of it’s adherence? Maybe it could be the paint I used? Or possibly the way I sprayed it. In any case, I’m sure it was operator error!

This one smudged too!
Now you will just have to imagine these next steps. You know how it is, you fail, and then you go on to plan B not sure if it is going to work, so you don’t even bother to take pictures. Surely you’ve been there too? Tell me I’m not alone!
I designed the three words again, this time using a different font, but the same font for all three words. I cut out the stencil area and made a window again on all three plates. (I soaked the plates in some warm soapy water and used a razor blade to remove the messy black paint)
This time I sprayed the paint much lighter, and I sprayed the paint straight on, being careful not to let the paint ooze under my stencil.

Here are my plates after peeling away the newspaper, Scotch Blue and the stencil.
I have wanted a Silhouette SD for so long, I am so anxious to make tons of projects with anything and everything I can!

I don't know... lol... those are too cute... I am loving that machine Gail... this is torture watching how easy it is. I want one so bad. To be able to make your own stencils at your own will is like striking gold.
Have fun for us all.
Hugs, Deb
Love it!
Why we don´t have this in Argentina???
Hugs!

So fun!! I can't wait to see what else you make with it! :]
They look great - once you got the hang of it!
They look great! Glad to see that round 2 went well! :)
Wow I love how those turned out Gail. I think you could do so much with that.
Hey, Gail.. cute idea for the plates and I love that you keep it real and show us your messups too.. have a great day.
I nver heard of a silhouette SD, so glad I stopped by....NOW I WANT ONE!!! It's nice to know other people aren't perfect to!!!!THANKS!!!
your second attempt came out beautifully! try and try again!
i have only just this month, seen or heard of the Silhouette! i WANT one!!! :D i think the plates are adorable!
Another reason why I love you...YOU show the oopsies or the 1st drafts. I love that you showcase the imperfections so that the rest of us out here know that it does take a while to "master" something like this. :) I am so excited about your giveaway...How many ways will we be able to enter bc I will enter all of them. :)
Cheers~

I am with Megan (above)...I love that you show the "learning curve". We all have one, but so few people talk about the missteps along the way to becoming competent. I'm impressed, actually, with how easily you're mastering this little machine. The plates are clever.
Yay, much better the second time! I have to admit though, I've never used spray paint for stencils. I've always used a pouncer and acrylics, or decoart actually has stencil paint that is much thicker which keeps it from oozing. At any rate, your plates are so fun and I am so glad you are getting to play with your Silhouette! :)
Way to hang in there Gail! I like that they all have the same font now. They will look cute grouped together.
Yay Gail! I love the plates, and the fun font. I"m so happy that you got the Silhouette...so much fun. You'll have to let us know the good, the bad and the ugly of it...I've been wanting one, too, but was unsure of how 'great' everyone keeps saying it is. Would love to hear from you on that.
Super awesome they let you have one!! I'm jealous but in a good way!!!! Thanks for showing us how it works.
I've had so many oops projects like that! Your finished project looks great!
How cool that you got a Silhouette!
