Small 4x4 tiles are easy to turn into coasters.
Do you remember this box of tiles I got at a yard sale?
I decoupaged some small calendars on some of them last year.
But today’s project is not about decoupaging.
For this project I used:
- DecoArt (Americana) Gloss Enamels (black)
- Cutting Edge Stencils Fleur-de-lis stencil
- tiles
- alcohol
- makeup sponge
- paint brushes
- ScotchBlue painter’s tape
- cork dots
I gathered my materials.
DecoArt recommends cleaning your glass (tiles) with alcohol.
I chose to use a makeup sponge to apply my paint.
I put a little puddle of paint in a tray and taped down my stencil.
I’m not very good with stencils. I rolled some painter’s tape to help hold the stencil down.
The makeup sponge gave a funny texture to the paint.
I decided to go over the entire area with the paint using a paint brush. Jamie’s Andy gave me two sets of really nice paint brushes for Christmas!
Next came the hard part! DecoArt recommends waiting 48 hours before setting the paint by baking it in the oven. Have I ever told you how impatient I am?
The directions from DecoArt:
Allow to air cure for 21 days or allow painted project to dry 48 hours. Place in cold oven; set temperature at 325 degrees; bake 30 minutes; turn off oven and crack open door. Allow project to cool down before removing. NOTE: Not for direct contact with food.
I put the tiles on a stoneware (Pampered Chef) because I was a little worried about heating up the tiles. If you’ve used stoneware you know that it keeps a constant temperature and doesn’t overheat like a metal cookie sheet does. I also chose to lay the tiles on scraps of tin foil.
I applied some cork dots to the back of the tiles.
Here they are all tied up looking pretty!
It also looks great displayed on an easel until you need to use it as a coaster!
Have you ever seen my small easels made from drapery hooks?
If you want to see my other project “painting on glass” check it out over at the DIY Club! While you’re there, check out the January Project Party, and link up!
I really like this Gloss Enamels paint by DecoArt! If you’ve never tried it, you should.
- Jen did with her mustache glasses
- Holly prettied up her door and some windows
- Cheri is showing off her numbered glasses & plates
- Roeshel made some glitter globes for Christmas, but this would be a great project for Valentine’s day too.
My friends over at the DIY Club are so talented and creative! The January link party continues, someone is going to win a HUGE prize package! I hope it’s YOU!

sooo cute!
Very cute...
Gail if you wet your sponge and wring out well before you use them and it won't leave that texture... I use them all the time for stenciling... you do have to do a couple of coats with them too.
I was given a box of tile one time...next time I stumble across it..I think I'll pull out a few and see what I can come up with. TFS
I really like the idea of painting tiles. I have a few in my bathroom that I would like to paint over. Do you think that paint would hold up without baking it, as I am not about to take the tiles off the wall to do that?
Deb-- THANKS for sharing that tidbit with me!
Trudy--It says it air cures in 21 days. I think it would work if it is not in the shower area. You would have to make sure they were absolutely clean and dry. I think that's a creative idea!
Those are so cute, I have a lot of tiles and stencils. Thanks for the idea.
Such a great idea for the box of old tiles just sitting in the garage!!
They look great!
I need new coasters. Mine are wire and beaded and defeat the whole purpose of what a coaster is supposed to do! I'll have to check this out!
Love those! I have tons of tiles I keep meaning to do this to. Love your mini drapery hook holder, genius I tell ya!
Thanks for sharing over at Whisperwood Cottage..This is great project for 2011!!!
Thoses would make good gifts. Trish
Oh....I made these 2 years ago for a professor. I love this idea! I think they can be done so cute and more importantly...UBER cheap!

Amy
thank you so much for the kind post on my blog. You are my not so secret DIY heroine!
Greetings from across the border,

Those look great. Fleur de Lis are one of my favorites things. My mom just got a new cricut cartridge with a fleur de lis on it. I think I might use that and cut it out of vinyl and put it on the coasters, and there's no wait. I'm a little short in the patience department, too:))

I haven't tried DecoArt yet. I've used PermEnamel though. I'll have to try some Decoart next.
